On the western shore of the largest lake in Italy, Limone sul Garda is the last Lombard municipality on the border with Riva del Garda, in Trentino Alto-Adige. According to tradition, the place takes its name from the Latin word ‘limen’, meaning border.

Lying close to the mountains, the picturesque village is a jewel location where colors, scents and splendid views come together to give you an unforgettable experience. The colorful houses, the flowers, the charming harbor and the crystal-clear water make Limone a wonderful postcard, a place to get lost and then find yourself.

The village is a place to be discovered and savored, a magical area, where quality and tradition reign supreme. The history of this place to visit on Lake Garda is truly peculiar and fascinating, let me tell you something more.

Hard to imagine, but in the past Limone was very different from how we know it today. The village was once a small isolated village, dedicated to fishing and the cultivation of olive trees.

It is only with the domination of the Republic of Venice in the 15th century that the town begins its incredible metamorphosis. Expands its activities, the first lemon houses are born and starts a thriving export of citrus fruits throughout Europe.

After the decline due to the First World War, the town experienced a turning point in 1932 thanks to the construction of the Western Gardesana road. From this moment, Limone opens up to the world, resumes its activities and begins to be one of the most popular tourist destinations on the lake.

However, it seems that the country’s centuries-old isolation has also had positive implications … Don’t miss the next few lines to discover a surprising curiosity about this place to visit on Lake Garda!

Did you know that Limone is known as the place where you live longer? It has been scientifically proven that, following isolation, the inhabitants developed a mutated form of apolipoprotein. This protein confers extreme longevity and protects against cardiovascular disease. A kind of long life elixir! 2. THE SECOND OF THE THREE THINGS TO SEE IN LIMONE SUL GARDA: THE LIMONAIE

“The morning was magnificent, a little cloudy, but calm at sunrise. We passed in front of Limone, with its gardens and terraces up the slope of the mountains; a show of wealth and grace”.

This is how the poet Goethe described the lemon groves in 1786, when, crossing the lake by boat, he found himself in front of this peculiar spectacle.

The lemon houses are places where history and nature meet and where tradition and love for one’s land have been handed down for hundreds of years. Imposing structures on several levels and covered by wooden beams, from the lemon houses you can enjoy an incredible view of the lake.

If you want to live this unforgettable experience, a visit to at least one of the lemon houses cannot really be missing from your itinerary.

During the citrus season, lose yourself among lemons, bergamots, oranges, grapefruits, cedars and so on and so forth! A fragrant vortex in a unique location of its kind. Be prepared to take a few steps to reach them, but I assure you it will be worth it!

But which lemon houses can you visit? Do not miss the next lines to find out which are in this place to visit on Lake Garda!

In Limone sul Garda you can visit 3 lemon houses: the Limonaia del Castél, that of Via Borghi and that of Tesol. The first, built in the early 18th century by the Amadei family, is undoubtedly the most famous.

Passed the property to numerous families, in 1995 it was handed over to the municipality to then be redeveloped in 2004, the year from which it became open to visitors. To reach it, just follow the ceramic tiles around the streets of the town, you can’t go wrong!

The Limonaia del Castél, like the others, is closed on three sides to allow the plants to be exposed to the sun. During the winter, however, the terrace is covered to protect the plants from the cold, transforming itself into a real greenhouse.

This historic stone lemon house extends over several terraces, reachable via the small stairs on the sides. The peace and tranquility you breathe are truly unique and a walk in these gardens will be a truly special experience. The silence will make you feel compelled not to disturb them… yes, I’m talking about citrus fruits!

Thanks to the explanatory panels, the visit also allows you to learn about the types of citrus fruits present, the ancient cultivation methods and the history of Limone. In short, a 360 ° experience!
