Padenghe sul Garda is a village on Lake Garda’s western shore, in the province of Brescia, between Desenzano del Garda and Moniga del Garda. What makes it stand out is its castle — believed to be the oldest in the Valtenesi area — still standing at the centre of the old town.

The history of Padenghe sul Garda

The earliest traces of settlement here date back to Roman times, with a villa and a small commercial and military port near San Cassiano. In the early Middle Ages, between the 9th and 10th centuries — during the Hungarian invasions — residents abandoned the lakeside village to fortify a hilltop, where the first castle took shape, later consolidated around the year 1000 as part of a defensive network that also included the nearby castles of Lonato, Moniga, Manerba, Polpenazze and Puegnago.

The village gained formal recognition in 1154, when Frederick Barbarossa confirmed its territorial rights at the Diet of Roncaglia. Over the following centuries the castle changed hands repeatedly — contested between Brescia and Verona, taken by the della Scala family in 1330, held by Cansignorio in 1362, granted autonomy under the Visconti, placed under Pandolfo Malatesta in 1414, and finally garrisoned by the Venetian Republic after the Peace of Lodi in 1454.

1. Padenghe Castle

Believed to be the oldest castle in the Valtenesi, it was built in three phases: the crenellated walls between the 9th and 10th centuries, “Il Castellino” with its circular tower around the 14th century, and finally the entrance tower with drawbridge, whose arrow slits are still visible. It has three towers, the tallest over 21 metres high. Entry is always free: the theatre and tower are open 9:00-18:00 in winter and 9:00-21:00 in summer.

2. Chiesa di Sant’Emiliano

A romantic hermitage perched on a promontory overlooking the lake — one of Padenghe’s best viewpoints, and a good stop if you’re after a quieter spot than the more touristy parts of the shore.

3. Zona Umida Balosse

A protected wetland with rare orchids and marsh plant species — an unusual find for a Lake Garda village, and a sign of how much of Padenghe’s surrounding land has stayed rural rather than built up for tourism.

What makes Padenghe different

Compared to other towns on this shore, Padenghe has stayed noticeably more residential and less built for tourism: no large lakefront hotels, a historic centre that’s still lived in year-round, vineyards and olive groves separating it from neighbouring Moniga del Garda, and even a protected wetland just outside the centre — a mix that makes it a quieter alternative to both Desenzano and Sirmione.

Padenghe sits on the lake road between Desenzano del Garda and Moniga del Garda, a few minutes from the Desenzano exit on the A4 Milan-Venice motorway. The closest airport is Verona (VRN), around 35-40 minutes by car.
