The historical center of Peschiera del Garda is surrounded by a Venetian pentagonal fortress, which was built for defense between the 16th and the 17h century.
The works started around 1550 under the supervision of the Duke of Urbino Guidobaldo II Della Rovere, general commander of the Venetian militias.
The fortress is located in a geographically strategic place, as it lies in the most southern part of Lake Garda, at the beginning of the Mincio river.
This magnificent Venetian fortress became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site from 9 July 2017.
If you speak about a gondola, surely, in all countries of the world they will think about Venice.
But let’s find out more about this characteristic means of transport: why are the gondolas for example black?
At the time of the Serenissima republic, a competition was created to make them a symbol of power and ease, the nobles who owned them challenged each other to make their gondola more sumptuous and colorful than those of others.
To put order and stop this trend, the Serenissima Senate enacted a law that allowed the gondolas to be black only.
Those who did not abide by this got a hefty fine.
What could be better than go and discover the wonderful Venetian fortress that surrounds Peschiera del Garda, if not on board of an authentic Venetian gondola to fully live the experience?
