Between History and Legend

It is natural to wonder why such a titanic feat was undertaken to build a church in an apparently inaccessible place. The answer is rooted in the heart of the 16th century and is linked to the miraculous appearance of a statue of the Madonna.

According to popular tradition, this extraordinary event took place right on the rocky spur where the sanctuary stands today, immediately turning it into a destination for spiritual pilgrimage. The name “Corona” (Crown), however, is no coincidence: it evokes the majestic setting of the Baldo mountains which, like a natural crown, surround and jealously guard this sacred place.

Over the centuries, the original building was modified, expanded, and rebuilt several times to welcome the faithful, until it reached its current spectacular structure, completed in 1975.

How to Visit Madonna della Corona

The sanctuary is located in the Veneto region, in the locality of Spiazzi (Municipality of Ferrara di Monte Baldo), about 45–50 minutes by car from Peschiera del Garda and the main towns of Lake Garda. It is the perfect destination for a day trip that combines trekking and spirituality.

On Foot (The Path of Hope): The historical route starts from Brentino Belluno. This is the famous Pilgrims’ Path (Sentiero dei Pellegrini): an itinerary immersed in nature with an elevation gain of about 600 meters and no fewer than 1,500 steps. It is manageable for less experienced hikers but requires trekking shoes and is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

By Car and Shuttle (The Easy Option): You can reach the parking lot in Spiazzi by car. From there, continue on foot for about 15 minutes down a paved, downhill road. For the return journey (or for those with reduced mobility), a shuttle bus service is available at a cost of €3,5 for a round-trip ticket.

The Architecture of the Sanctuary: A Masterpiece in the Rock

Once you clear the final step, the visual impact inevitably leaves you breathless, combined with the fatigue of the climb and the majesty of the panorama. It is impossible to remain indifferent to this place, where centuries-old devotion seems to wrap around the structure like an invisible cloak.

The facade and the bell tower, built in Neo-Gothic style, showcase warm orange tones alternating with white, perfectly mirroring the shades of the rock wall in which the church is embedded. Even before crossing the threshold, this perfect color harmony conveys a deep sense of balance between body, soul, and nature.

Inside, the church is laid out in a classic Latin cross plan, enriched by sculptures and evocative ex-voto plaques. Among the most significant elements is the Holy Stairs (Scala Santa), a faithful reproduction of the one preserved in Rome inside the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano; tradition dictates that it be climbed on one’s knees, reciting a prayer on each step. However, the most spectacular and magnetic detail remains the left wall: here there are no bricks, but rather the bare, raw rock of the mountain itself penetrating the building.

The Church in the Rock and Its Legends

The Neo-Gothic facade and the bell tower (last renovated in 1975) echo the warm colors of the surrounding stone. Inside, the most spectacular feature is the left wall, made entirely of the mountain’s living rock. Standing out among the main artworks are the reproduction of the Holy Stairs of Rome (to be climbed on one’s knees) and the numerous ex-voto plaques.

Tradition blends faith and folklore into a fascinating narrative: According to legend, in 1522 a host of angels rescued a statue of the Pietà from Muslim invaders on the Island of Rhodes, miraculously transporting it to Monte Baldo. For the first twenty years, the place was so inaccessible that the faithful could only lower themselves down using ropes and winches, until the miraculous growth of a large tree over the ravine allowed for the construction of the first stone bridge.

What to Do Nearby: Trekking and Dining

The village of Spiazzi offers several traditional inns and small restaurants perfect for a typical mountain lunch or a hot chocolate. If you wish to extend your day on Monte Baldo, you can venture past the main parking lot toward Ferrara di Monte Baldo and Novezza. These areas are rich in natural and historical trails, among which the panoramic Path of Love (Sentiero dell’Amore) and the suggestive Path of the Trenches (Sentiero delle Trincee) stand out.
