La Limonaia del Castèl
Facing the sun to capture every single ray, the white pillars and stone walls of La Limonaia del Castèl stand out along the lakeshore, bearing witness to a glorious past. Together with Gargnano, Limone sul Garda preserves these world-unique “lemon gardens,” which once made the village the northernmost citrus cultivation point in Europe.

How long does it take to visit the Limonaia del Castèl?
A full visit usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes. It is the perfect amount of time to stroll leisurely through the terraces, take panoramic photographs, and delve into the history at the museum and educational center.
Where are the lemon houses located in Limone sul Garda?
Although the village was once dotted with these structures, the Limonaia del Castèl is the most famous and accessible. It is located northwest of the center, built against the rocky walls of Mount Mughéra, and is easily reachable on foot starting from the old port.
What is a "Limonaia"?
It is a monumental protective agricultural structure, unique to Lake Garda. It consists of high perimeter walls and stone pillars that, during the winter months, were enclosed with wooden planks and glass panes to protect the plants from the frost.
What is the history of the Limonaia del Castèl?
Built in the early 18th century, it passed through several historic families until it was purchased in 1926 by Giuseppe Segala, a former miner in America. Since 1995, it has been owned by the Municipality, which has transformed it into a museum and a productive center open to visitors.
Is the Limonaia del Castèl accessible to people with disabilities?
The Limonaia del Castèl offers free admission for people with disabilities and one accompanying person. As it is a historic 18th-century structure built against the rock, accessibility is guaranteed only to the first terrace (ground floor) and the entrance area. Unfortunately, the upper levels and other còle can only be reached via the original stone stairs, which precludes wheelchair access. However, we still recommend visiting the first level to enjoy the splendid view and the monumental setting.

Access Procedures and Regulations
Dogs & Pets
To ensure the protection of the citrus plants and respect for the museum area, we recommend contacting the Tourist Office or the Town Hall (+39 0365 954008) before your visit to check the latest pet policies. In any case, dogs are welcome within the historic center of Limone as long as they are kept on a leash.
Families & Children
The structure is a “vertical adventure.” Strollers can only be used on the first terrace; for a full visit to the upper levels (còle), we highly recommend using a baby carrier or backpack due to the numerous historic stone steps.
Recurring Summer Event: Limonaia Sotto le Stelle (Limonaia Under the Stars)
During the summer (May 24 – Sept 27), the site remains open until 10:00 PM. This is the most magical time of day: the white pillars are illuminated, creating a unique contrast with the dark lake. Evenings often feature lemon-based product tastings and live music—an unmissable chance to experience the Limonaia in a romantic and evocative atmosphere.
