THE ARENA LYRIC FESTIVAL

Many people know it as the “Arena Opera Festival”. Regardless of the name, we all know what this is about.
It is an event that the whole world envies us. One of the most important music opera events that every summer has as setting the wonderful Arena of Verona.
But, what do you really know about this event?

For example, did you know that the first performance, the one that has inaugurated the festival, dates back to 1913? It was the Aida of Giuseppe Verdi, chosen to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the artist.

«The Great Triumph of Aida, in Verona’s Roman Amphitheatre, to the acclaim of the delirious and cosmopolitan crowd». This were the words on the Arena newspaper on the 12th of August 1913.

Besides being a very important event, it represented, also, a change in the scenography. With the Premier of Aida, they abandoned the painted scenes, typical of the traditional theatres, and adopted new three-dimensional elements.
It was the combination of news and anniversaries that made this premiere a great success. So famous that between the public travelled from all over the world some fights occurred in order to access to the event.
What’s even more interesting is that between the audience of the premiere there were celebrities as Giacomo Puccini, Arrigo Boito, Pietro Mascagni and Franz Kafka.

It was only during the two World Wars that the festival stopped for a period of ten years. But this is not the worst thing that happened to the arena.

Now I tell you a very interesting anecdote about this place to visit near Lake Garda.

On 12th August 1962, more precisely at 5:20 pm, a terrible fire broke out. That day was scheduled “Un ballo in maschera” and only three days after the lyric season would have been over. The fire destroyed the scenography and damaged part of the bleachers. Fortunately, the firefighters extinguished the fire after few hours.
It took seven years to complete the restoration.

However, let’s leave this sadness and go back to a dreamy mood. In 1998 the Ente Lirico changed by giving life to the Fondazione Arena.
Coming back to present days, in the last few years the lyric season opens with an incredible TV premiere.

Are you curious to know some other interesting facts?

Surely you remember that the fist representation was in 1913.
Therefore, in 2013, the year of the centenary of the festival, it was impossible not to celebrate in great style. How? They played the Aida directed by La Fura dels Baus. They re-proposed the reconstruction of the original opera.

But it wasn’t the only recurrence. It was also the bicentenary of Verdi and Wagner, so, in order to celebrate it, the Foundation decided to organise the season in their honour. They proposed mainly Operas by Verdi and they also organised a gala in honour of Richard Wagner.

The news does not end here. For the first time in 2014 the Arena of Verona hosted the Carmina Burana of Carl Orff. No need to say that it was a big success, recognised by the public and the critics.

As we all know the operas scheduled for the year 2020 were postponed in 2021. But this year, 2022, the Arena Lyric Festival is ready to start again in great style and to return to its previous splendour. The program is dense and, as you can imagine, unmissable.
